Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) will be absent from the Senate this week as he recovers from abdominal surgery over the weekend, his office announced Monday.
Barrasso underwent laparoscopic surgery for an abdominal obstruction over the weekend at Banner Wyoming Medical Center in Casper, Wyoming, his office confirmed in a statement. His office announced that the surgery was a success.
“Bobby and I would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at Banner Hospital for their excellent care. He is doing well and was discharged this morning. He will continue his recovery at home in Casper this week. Doctors have cleared us to do so. In due course, I will return to Washington, D.C.,” Barrasso, 71, wrote on Monday.
It's expected to be a busy week as the Senate prepares to consider a government funding bill ahead of a looming Friday night deadline to avoid a government shutdown. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York said Sunday he would bring the bill to the Senate floor on Tuesday.
A two-step stopgap bill announced Sunday night would extend the funding threat beyond Friday and Feb. 2 deadlines until early March, giving lawmakers time to finalize the details of 12 spending bills. Will give more.
The bill would extend funding for some areas of the government until March 1st and extend funding for other government agencies until March 8th.
Barrasso, 71, has served in the U.S. Senate since 2007 after serving four years in the Wyoming State Senate and 24 years as an orthopedic surgeon. He is Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference and serves as Ranking Member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.
