A shootout that left two teenagers dead at a Texas library in December began when one of the teens tried to buy an AR-15 rifle with counterfeit money, prosecutors said.

Obie Perez, 17, is on death row in connection with the Dec. 30 shooting deaths of Angel Solis and Elijah Martinez, both 15, according to court documents obtained by authorities. He has been charged with two crimes. fox dallas.

Perez allegedly drove Martinez to the Mountain Creek Branch Library in Dallas to meet Solis to purchase a rifle. During the transaction, Solis gave Martinez a duffel bag containing a rifle, documents said.

In return, Martinez paid Solis fake money, authorities said. At one point, the two began firing at each other.

Both were struck. Perez hid a 9mm handgun in his bushes before calling 911, according to an arrest affidavit.

When authorities arrived, he allegedly gave them another handgun. The suspect initially denied witnessing the shooting, but investigators later said he knew Solis was planning to rob him by giving him counterfeit money for the weapon. It is said that he admitted this to the members.

Perez is being held in the Dallas County Jail on $2 million bail, according to jail records.
