Blinken was stranded in Davos on Wednesday after the plane he was scheduled to fly suffered a “significant malfunction” related to an oxygen leak.
Members of the traveling press corps said another plane was then prompted to pick him up.
Blinken was originally scheduled to fly into Davos by helicopter to attend the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting on Monday, then fly back to Washington, D.C., on Wednesday.
US Air Force spokeswoman Rose Riley said the US diplomats were scheduled to return on a C-40 aircraft from Joint Base Andrews.
Blinken took a helicopter from the WEF conference to Zurich and then began boarding a plane, only to be informed of a malfunction and told he would not be able to return home as early as planned.
Mr. Blinken then reportedly instructed the traveling press team and his assistants to make their own commercial flight travel arrangements back to Washington.
The WEF announced that this year's program aims to “rebuild trust” and get back to the basics of candid and fruitful communication between business, civil society and policy makers.
