New England Patriots’ new head coach suggests not being racist requires you to ‘see color’: ‘I do see color’

The New England Patriots' new head coach suggested Wednesday that one needs to “see color” to not be a racist.

At a press conference to officially introduce Jerod Mayo as the Patriots' new head coach, a reporter asked him about the significance of Mayo being the Patriots' first black head coach.

Team owner Robert Kraft described himself as “really colorblind in terms of how it felt to lose on Sunday” and said he believes the Patriots will be in the best position to win the NFL Championship. Although she responded by mentioning her goal of getting hired, Mayo admitted she didn't feel the same way.

“I see color, because I believe that if you don’t see color, you don’t see racism,” he said.

“No matter what happens, whether it's black, white, disabled… most people, when they're young, they heat up the room. Young people know what that means. But what I'm saying is, no. “I want you to be able to go to those people and really understand those people, going back to whatever it is: Black, White, yellow, it doesn't really matter,” he continued.

“But it's important so we can try to solve the problems that we all know we have,” Mayo added, though he wasn't referring to what “problems” It was not made clear.

Whether humans should “see color” is hotly debated.

For example, anti-racism advocates discuss it Visibility of color is a prerequisite for racial reconciliation. Meanwhile, colorblind advocates argue that people should not be classified based on or because of the color of their skin.

Still, even within the small fraternity of NFL head coaches, disagreements exist.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles, who is also Black, denounced seeing color in October 2022 when asked about the naming of Steve Wilkes as interim head coach of the then-Carolina Panthers. .

“When we coach each other, we don’t care about the color of our skin, we just know each other,” Bowles said. “I have a lot of really good white friends who coach in this league as well, and I don't think it's a big deal as long as we coach each other, I think it's normal. I think Wilkes will do well. I had an opportunity to do the job, and hopefully he'll do it.

“And we coach the ball, so we don't focus on color,” he declared.
