Namibian president to undergo cancer treatment

Namibia's President Hage Geingob will begin treatment for cancer after a routine medical examination and subsequent biopsy detected cancer cells, his office announced on Friday.

The Namibia President's Office announced that the 82-year-old man underwent a colonoscopy and gastroscopy on January 8, followed by a biopsy. Geingob's office did not provide further details about his diagnosis, but said he would continue to perform his duties.

Geingob, who has been president of the southern African country since 2015, is due to complete his second and final term this year. In 2014, he said he had survived prostate cancer.

“Based on the advice of his medical team, President Geingob will undergo appropriate treatment to combat the cancerous cells,” the presidential office said in a statement.
