Bob Good to Speaker Johnson: ‘Don’t assume you have our votes’

Rep. Bob Good (R-Va.) on Friday warned House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) about the House Freedom Caucus' support of the bill.

“Don't assume we have your vote for things that don't matter when we don't want you to vote for things that matter,” the Freedom Caucus chairman told the host of “The Hill On.” In an interview with Blake Berman. News Nation” Friday.

Goode's statement came after the House passed a temporary funding bill on Thursday after Johnson struck a deal with other legislative leaders to avoid a partial government shutdown. But Johnson needed to rely on Democratic support in the House of Representatives to pass the bill.

Johnson brought the bill to the floor under a suspension of the rules, bypassing the rules' first approval requirement and speeding up the process for bill approval. While conservatives are likely to block the rule, Prime Minister Johnson is unlikely to be able to do so because suspending the rule would require two-thirds support for the bill to pass, thus requiring bipartisan support. had to compensate for the decline in approval ratings.

President Biden signed the bill on Friday, meaning the government will remain closed until March.

The House Freedom Caucus had already expressed its displeasure with the bill on Sunday, with the caucus' accounts on social media calling it a “capitulation” to the left.

“The @HouseGOP plans to pass a short-term spending bill that continues Pelosi's level with Biden policies to buy time to pass a long-term Pelosi-level spending bill with Biden policies. This is what capitulation looks like,” the caucus said. Posted on X (old Twitter).

Johnson's predecessor, Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), sided with Democrats in October on a continuing resolution on government funding from Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida). McCarthy, who was ousted from his post under similar circumstances in October. His efforts to remove McCarthy from the chairmanship.

“Enough of continuing resolutions. We have had plenty of time to address funding levels. Even though the southern border remains in disarray and the national debt continues to soar. , Congress continues to oppose this. We are doing the American people a disservice,” said Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.). I wrote it on X Sunday.

Mr. Biggs was one of eight Republicans, including Mr. Gaetz, who voted with Democrats in October to oust Mr. McCarthy from the chairmanship.
