Killers of the Flower Moon star Lily Gladstone slams Yellowstone for portraying the American West, but admits she previously auditioned for the hit series .

The 37-year-old made history earlier this month when she became the first indigenous person to win the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama. In an interview with Vulture that resurfaced in August, Gladstone slammed “Yellowstone” for what the show described as “cowboy myth-making.”

“It's a delusion! It's deplorable!” Mr. Gladstone said of the series, created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson.

“No offense to native talent for that,” she added. “We auditioned a few times. That's what we wanted.”

According to Vulture, Gladstone's father is of Blackfeet and Nez Perce descent, and his mother is white. In a 2017 interview with the Guardian, Gladstone revealed that she lived on the Blackfeet Nation reservation in Montana until she was 11 years old.

Gladstone co-starred with Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro in Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon, based on David Grann's nonfiction book of the same name.

The actress played Molly Kyle, an Osage Nation woman living on the tribe's reservation in Oklahoma. In the film, her character marries World War I veteran Ernest Burkhardt (DiCaprio).

Set in the 1920s, the film follows Molly, who, according to the synopsis, “exposes and survives a series of greed-fueled murders committed against the Osage community after oil is discovered on Osage land. It depicts “fighting for the sake of others.”

In an interview with Vulture, Gladstone praised Killers of the Flower Moon's focus on Indigenous characters.

“This is not a white savior story,” she told the outlet. “It's the Osage saying, 'Do something, we have money, come help us.'”
