Former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) said Sunday that Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley won the 2024 Republican nomination, despite former President Trump having a double-digit lead in polls. He said there may still be a chance to win.
Hogan said on ABC's “This Week” panel that the New Hampshire primary “really surprises us sometimes” and hinted that Haley could win in the state. Hogan also endorsed Haley's nomination last week, praising her as having “momentum” to be the Republican Party's best candidate next November.
“That's where the unexpected happens. Look at Bill Clinton. Look at John McCain. And the fact that she's only down 11 points with so much momentum. Look, it's going to look like nothing at all, just like Iowa,” Hogan said.
He also said that since this is an open primary in which voters of all affiliations can vote, many independent voters will support Haley to prevent Trump from winning the nomination.
“And I think what you're going to see is a lot of independents. There are no Democratic primaries, no independents who want to stop Donald Trump. This is the last line of defense. Republicans, 50 percent of Republicans don't like Trump. Tuesday is their day, so she has a few more days. Now, let's see what happens,” Hogan said.
“But it's not impossible for her. If she performs above expectations, I think she'll come into South Carolina with great momentum,” he added.
According to The Hill/Decision Desk's average poll, Trump has an approval rating of about 47%, leading Haley by about 11 points. Haley received about 36% of the vote, with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis far behind at 5.7%. New Hampshire's primary is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, just over a week after Trump won the Iowa caucuses.
