Americans view most jobs as less ethical than in recent years, according to a Gallup poll released Monday.
new investigation asked 800 respondents to rate the integrity and ethical standards of people in 23 different fields. It found that the only job rated higher in 2023 (25%) than in 2019 (24%) was union leadership. In the 2019 survey, all occupations except veterinarians were included on the list.
Nurses had the highest rating at 78%, down from 85% in 2019. This profession reached its peak in 2020 with 89%. This is her 22nd consecutive year that the nurse has held a positive rating.
Since Gallup began surveying ethics in various professions in 1976, pharmacists (55 percent), clergy (32 percent), journalists (19 percent), senators (8 percent), and members of Congress (6 percent) Five occupations recorded their lowest ratings ever. percent).
Three other occupations are tied for their lowest points on record, with bankers (19%) and business executives (12%) last rated this low in the aftermath of the Great Recession, according to Gallup. Gallup also tracks partisan divisions in views in various areas, finding that Democrats or those who lean Democratic view all professions as more ethical than Republicans. The exception is police officers, who were rated as ethical by 37% of Democrats and 55% of Republicans.
College educators have the widest partisan differences in ethics ratings, with 62% of Democrats and 22% of Republicans viewing the field as ethical. Psychiatrists followed with a 28-point difference between parties, journalists followed with a 25-point difference between parties, and trade union leaders followed with a 20-point difference.
