Train drivers' union Aslef has called off another five-day strike at the LNER after the state-owned railway company withdrew plans to impose a minimum service level in industrial action next week.
LNER, which runs trains on the East Coast Main Line from London to Scotland, had told Aslef it intended to use controversial new laws to keep trains running during the strike.
The minimum service level bill passed by the Conservative Party remains untested to date. The LNER's U-turn comes as ministers privately lobby rail operators to use the new powers during a rolling strike across England's rail operators next week I question whether it is possible.
LNER has not confirmed plans to force some drivers to operate at least 40% of their normal schedule during the strike, but it is understood the plans prompted Aslef's escalation of action announced last week. This plan is now to be withdrawn.
