The Georgia Senate is expected to approve a subpoena panel this week to investigate corruption allegations against Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, Breitbart News exclusively learned on Monday.
The potential commission is important because Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) last week refused to open a criminal investigation into Willis, citing a need to open an investigation by a now-defunct oversight commission. It is.
Georgia Sen. Greg Dolezal (R-Forsyth); The commission, the only one of its kind in Georgia, is made up of nine senators, only three of whom are Democrats.
“The Georgia Legislature has a responsibility to hold public officials accountable,” Georgia Lieutenant Governor Bert Jones exclusively told Breitbart News. “The recent reports are deeply disturbing and we thank Senator Dolezal for her leadership on this issue.”
The timeline for establishing the committee appears imminent. Dolezal plans to introduce the resolution on Monday. It will then likely be assigned to the Senate Rules Committee on Tuesday. If approved by the Rules Committee, the bill could be voted on by the full Senate as early as this week. If passed by the Senate, the mandate committee would appoint members.
Willis is accused of fraud and corruption during the prosecution of former President Donald Trump. A January court filing by Mike Roman, a political operative and Trump co-defendant in the Georgia election case, makes four explosive allegations about Willis' conduct during the Trump prosecution. It was raised.
The complaint alleges the following:
- Nathan Wade, Willis' lead prosecutor in the Trump case, had an “inappropriate” relationship with Willis.
- Wade's law firm used funds paid by the county to take Willis on lavish vacations with potentially fraudulent payments.
- Mr. Wade was appointed without the necessary regulatory approval and had little experience as a prosecutor.
- Willis and Wade met twice with President Joe Biden's White House advisers before indicting Trump in August, and have questioned whether the White House is cooperating with Biden's prosecution of his 2024 political opponents. There are questions about this.
Such a “relationship, if proven to exist, would constitute a clear conflict of interest and fraud on the taxpayers of Fulton County and the State of Georgia,” Dolezal's resolution states, adding that “Willis' further involvement in the prosecution would be a clear conflict of interest and fraud on Fulton County and Georgia taxpayers.” Established grounds for rejecting. It could potentially be delayed indefinitely and require the appointment of a special prosecutor at public expense. ”
“[T]The Georgia State Senate has inherent power and authority to investigate the expenditure of public funds. [and] “The acts of public officials in carrying out their powers and duties under state law,” the resolution continues.
“[S]This inherent power includes all inherent investigative powers of the Georgia Senate, including the power to establish special committees for the purpose of conducting investigations and the power to compel the appearance and testimony of witnesses and the production of records. It includes the powers conferred on such committees. and the power to administer oaths or affirmations to witnesses.”
The resolution to investigate Willis is the latest effort to hold Fulton County prosecutors accountable. On Thursday, a Georgia judge ordered Willis to “respond” in writing to his corruption charges by Feb. 2. washington post report. The order requires prosecutors to speak on television about the charges on February 15th.
Mr. Willis has remained largely silent about the accusations. January 14th, speech At Big Bethel AME Church, she described herself as an “imperfect” and “flawed” human being, but suggested she had recently been the target of racism. “Who's going to play the race card when she only has one question? No. [it] Are they playing the race card? she asked. “I’ve been doing it for almost 30 years. [sic]”
