The rear windows of one of Honda’s top reliable vehicles are shattering

Honda plans to fix an issue in the 2023 Honda HR-V SUV that has received hundreds of complaints from consumers about the rear window breaking unexpectedly.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has posted numerous complaints on its website about windows breaking on their own without any impact. Some HR-V owners have reported windows breaking while parked, while others have witnessed windows breaking after getting into the car or while driving.

According to Honda, the issue is related to the use of the HR-V's rear defroster, where the defroster's heating element comes into contact with the sealer that secures the rear window, weakening the glass.

“American Honda has received a limited number of reports of rear hatch glass damage on 2023 Honda HR-V vehicles related to the use of rear defroster. It turns out that during the assembly process, a sealer was used to secure the rear glass, which came into contact with the defroster's heating element, causing hot spots and weakening the glass over time when using the defroster. “There is a possibility,” a Honda spokesperson told FOX Business.

During testing by Customer Reports last week, a tester in the New England area used the remote start to warm up the vehicle and the rear window shattered. The newspaper said: “There were no injuries and there was no damage to the rear cargo. However, testers had to clear broken glass from the driveway and the contents of the cargo area were no longer safe from the weather or theft.” It was reported.

Honda uses tempered glass in the HR-V, as it does in almost all of its new cars. Unlike traditional glass, which leaves behind sharp shards, tempered glass breaks into small, but mostly harmless, shards.

However, Consumer Reports says the issue should prompt Honda to recall the vehicles because a broken rear window while someone is driving could cause enough distraction to cause a crash. It pointed out.
