Over Half of Democrats Support Aborting Babies with Down Syndrome

More than half of Democrats support or strongly support eugenic abortion of children with Down syndrome, according to recent polls. found.

Respondents answered the question, “Do you strongly support, support, oppose, or strongly oppose abortion because your child will be born with Down syndrome?” Fifty-six percent of Democrats say they support such abortions, while 42% oppose them.

Democrats are at odds with respondents overall in the poll, with 58% of respondents opposed to aborting babies born with Down syndrome. Of all respondents, 39% said they would agree with aborting a baby with Down syndrome.

In contrast to Democrats, Republicans (75%) and independents (58%) overwhelmingly oppose the practice. However, 24% of Republicans and 39% of independents believe that babies with Down syndrome should be killed by abortion rather than being born.

The findings are part of a Knights of Columbus-Marist poll on abortion released in advance of the 2024 March for Life, conducted Jan. 8-9, 2024 among 1,371 adults. The results were statistically significant within ±3.6 percentage points. The poll also found that Americans overwhelmingly support abortion restrictions and pregnancy resource centers.

The Democratic Party's support for abortion of babies with Down syndrome is reminiscent of the Danish eugenics movement. In 2004, Denmark became one of the first countries to offer prenatal Down syndrome testing to all pregnant women.

“Nearly all pregnant women choose to be tested. More than 95 percent of those diagnosed with Down syndrome choose to have an abortion.” atlantic report “…Since universal screening was introduced, the number of children born with Down syndrome has declined precipitously. In 2019, only 18 children were born nationwide. (Approximately 6,000 children with Down syndrome are born in the United States each year. Masu.)”

“Down syndrome is a genetic disorder in which people are born with an extra copy of chromosome 21.” according to Go to Cleveland Clinic.

“This means they have a total of 47 chromosomes instead of 46. This can affect the development of their brain and body. Life expectancy of someone diagnosed with Down syndrome are 60 years of age or older,” the Cleveland Clinic said.
