Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) called for the Biden administration to secure the southern border after years of inaction as it faces a tough re-election battle.
In a recently published editorial, Bill bulletinTester said Democrats should put aside their political beliefs and accept that “allowing anyone to enter the country without due vetting and legal process undermines national security.”
“We know that drug cartels are taking advantage of these gaps in border security to smuggle drugs and people across the border. It must stop,” he wrote.
Tester said the border-opening tensions are causing significant pain to voters and that he has told President Joe Biden and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas that the situation is “unacceptable.”
“That's why I urge Senate leaders of both parties to prioritize resolving the border crisis. I believe this issue should have remained in Washington and worked on during the holidays.”
As pointed out by Epoch EpochTester is the only Democrat to hold high office in Montana after winning three close races, a luxury he may not have until 2024. Although it's not yet decided, Tester will likely face Republican Tim Sheehy, a former Navy SEAL and entrepreneur. He vowed to advance an America First agenda in the U.S. Senate.
“Whether it's war or business, I find problems and solve them,” Sheehy said when announcing his candidacy.
“America needs conservative leaders who love their country, and that's why I'm running for the U.S. Senate. I want a better future for my children, and your children, and my grandchildren. “Our campaign is about service, God and country, not politics as always,” he added.
Following Tester's op-ed, Sheehy took to social media to criticize Tester's repeated refusals to close the southern border.
“Montana is a northern border state and has a southern border issue because after living in Washington, D.C. for 18 years, it's a state with two faces.” [Tester] refused border security; We know what to do (President Trump has already done it!), but we need a strong leader who puts America first! ” He said.

Tester has not expressed support for a comprehensive border bill pushed by the Republican-led House of Representatives, as Democrats and Republicans in the U.S. Senate continue to compromise and the bill may not become significant.
