The House Ethics Committee will not take disciplinary action against Rep. Jamal Bowman of New York, despite finding that he was not honest about the infamous fire alarm incident. be.

Last September, Bowman claimed He “accidentally” pulled a fire alarm at the Cannon House office building, believing the exit door would open. Bowman claimed he made the mistake because he “rushed” to the House chamber “to vote.”

but, 16 page report An investigation by the Office of Congressional Ethics found that Bowman had lied.

“Surveillance video obtained by OCE shows Rep. Bowman intentionally pulling the fire alarm lever without turning around to see if the alarm prompted the emergency door to open. “There are,” the report explains. “Indeed…Congressman Bowman casually left the secure area after setting off the fire alarm and appeared unconcerned with actually departing through the exit.

“More importantly, the House of Representatives was in recess at the time this incident occurred. Contrary to his office's announcement, Rep. Bowman was not in session to conduct an impending vote, but rather in an emergency caucus meeting ( He was on his way to a Democratic Party convention,” the report said. Added.

The report includes text messages showing Bowman knew about the caucus “before he set off the fire alarm,” which showed Bowman heading to the House floor to vote. It proves that he knew what he meant.

However, OCE stopped short of accusing Bowman of intentionally lying.

“In light of this evidence, OCE finds that Congressman Bowman's public statements and explanations released by his staff are unreliable or misleading,” the report states.

Despite the misleading statements, the House Ethics Committee I decided that Any disciplinary action against Bowman would be “moot” because the House of Commons has already voted to censure him.

In addition, Bowman complied with a deferred sentencing agreement, the commission explained.

As part of that agreement, Bowman pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of falsely setting off a fire alarm. Bowman was also required to pay a $1,000 fine and formally apologize to the Capitol Police in exchange for prosecutors dropping the criminal charges.
