There are four potential Super Bowl matchups remaining heading into conference championship weekend.
- San Francisco 49ers vs. Baltimore Ravens
- San Francisco 49ers vs. Kansas City Chiefs
- Detroit Lions vs. Baltimore Ravens
- Detroit Lions vs. Kansas City Chiefs
NFL fans' demands on which games will be played in the big games are very important. Of course, the script has already been written. But with Super Bowl 58 just around the corner, we decided to ask his NFL fans around the league which matchup they'd most like to see. Just in case the screenwriter is listening and plans to rewrite it.
Incredibly, three of the remaining four games will be rematches from the 2023 regular season. The fourth possible matchup is a rematch of the Super Bowl we watched a little less than four years ago. So…which game does SB Nation's great NFL fan want to see in his two weeks?
49ers vs. Chiefs (13% of voters)
It's not really surprising that a small percentage of voters want to see the Kyle Shanahan vs. Andy Reid Bowl game on February 11th. We literally just watched this game play four years ago at Super Bowl LVI. Of course, we all know how it ended. Patrick Mahomes earned his first ring during a much easier time. It's no matter what fan base you belong to, most NFL fans are still baffled by this wonder kid, his no-look passes and sidearm throws that always seem to cut through the press like a lightsaber. It was a time when There's a sense of disillusionment watching Mahomes play now, but it's not because his skills weren't anything like those mentioned above, but rather it's much cooler to watch him demolish other NFL teams. That's why. It's not yours. When he disparages his favorite team, it's only a matter of time before flashbacks to the Tom Brady and Bill Belichick dynasties begin.
Kyle Shanahan's team is also Kyle Shanahan's team. Even though the system certainly culminated with a number of upgrades, including the addition of quarterback Brock Purdy and star receiver Brandon Aiyuk, drafted just two months after the Super Bowl loss, the system is still a system. Their defense is also still elite, with a variety of characters. So even though he's on two different teams, it still feels like the same story. That doesn't mean it's not worth watching. It's just not your first choice. that's ok. It's similar to how you'd rather watch Grease again than take the time to watch Grease 2. Give me the OG or give me a brand new movie. Next!
Ravens vs. 49ers (23% of voters)
The second least desirable matchup in the Super Bowl, according to SB Nation's big voters, is San Francisco 49ers vs. Baltimore Ravens. For those of you who understand the theme here, no one wants to watch the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl, at least not while the Detroit Lions are still active. This is evidenced by the fact that a whopping 47% of fans say they are rooting for the Lions to win the Super Bowl. Sorry, Cowboys. Your time on America's Team may have guided your course. It's Motor City time!
I can understand wanting to watch the Ravens over the Chiefs in the Super Bowl. Kansas City fought back in the divisional round with tight end Travis Kelce finally showing signs of life again in the red zone, but the Ravens are simply a better team. That was evident on the offensive end, with the Chiefs scoring over 30 points just three times all season. On the other hand, the defense, which has been Kansas City's saving grace amid the offensive struggles, still pales in comparison to the Ravens, who lead the league with a defensive DVOA of -23.3%, allowing a league-low 16.5 points per game. They outscored the 49ers, Lions and Dolphins by a combined score of 127-44.Yes, they are absolutely better team.
In the first matchup of Week 16, 49ers QB Brock Purdy had 255 passing yards, zero touchdowns, and four interceptions, resulting in an NFL passer rating of 42.6, his lowest ever for a career start. If this is our fateful matchup, please give us a more competitive match from the Bay.
Lions vs. Ravens (31% of voters)
Next, move on to the juicy setting. Here comes the Lions! Thirty-one percent of voters said they wanted to see the Lions play the Ravens in Super Bowl 58. This is interesting considering the first matchup between the two earlier this season wasn't exactly evenly thrilling either. In Week 5, the Ravens suffered their worst loss of the season to the Lions, holding them to a season-low six points and third-lowest yards of the season (337).
Considering how NFL fans have rallied around Detroit as the ultimate underdog this season, you have to think that the people voting for the Lions vs. Ravens Super Bowl will be Baltimore fans. Enough said.
Chiefs vs. Lions (33% of voters)
Come on, everyone. One-third of NFL fans think the 2023-24 NFL season should end exactly the same way it started, with a showdown between the Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions. Personally, he believes there are two reasons why the majority of voters want a Chiefs-Lions Super Bowl. First, it would be a pretty cool story if the same game bookends the season. In fact, this will be the first time since the NFL Kickoff Game was introduced in the 2002 season that two teams featured in the NFL Kickoff Game will meet in the Super Bowl.
The second reason people might be interested in the Chiefs vs. Lions Super Bowl is that it appears to be the Lions' most likely path to their first ever Super Bowl win. Not only did the Lions beat the Chiefs 21-20 in their first meeting on the road at Arrowhead; They also played a complete season that was much better than the Chiefs from top to bottom. Despite that success, it pales in comparison to the Ravens' success. The Ravens had already dominated the Lions earlier this season, winning 38-6. Therefore, those who root for the Lions in the future will probably expect them to face the Chiefs instead of the Ravens.
If this actually happens in Super Bowl XV…we'll see NFL fans come together to support Jared Goff and Co. in a way we've rarely seen before. Dew. Will Dan Campbell and drifter Jared Goff defeat the NFL's golden child? That's the best kneecap chewer, baby.
