Trump can delay paying full E. Jean Carroll damages until after appeal: report

Former President Trump can delay paying the $83.3 million a jury determined he owes E. Jean Carroll until he exhausts all appeal options he has vowed to pursue. The New York Times reported.

On Friday, a federal jury in New York ordered Trump to pay Carroll for defaming him in 2019 when he denied her accusations that he sexually assaulted her in the 1990s.

After the verdict, he announced that he would appeal the “absolutely ridiculous” decision.

The former president and business tycoon could pay millions of dollars to the court, which would hold the money while the appeal is pending, the Times noted.

Friday’s decision comes after Trump was found liable for sexually abusing a columnist and defaming her in separate comments, adding to the previous $5 million he was ordered to pay to Carroll. will be added to. Trump appealed the decision last year and at the time avoided paying Carroll immediately.

Trump may also try to secure a deposit to avoid paying her the full amount upfront, the Times reported. He may have to pay a deposit and provide collateral with interest and fees, but it also means he has to find someone to lend him a significant amount of money.

The former president, who is a leading candidate in the Republican primary, went out of his way to attend the trial, although he was not required to attend. He often chose court over campaigning, with the exception of the day he attended his mother-in-law’s funeral. During the trial, Trump was once threatened with being removed from the courtroom by the judge, and then became violent during Carroll’s closing argument.

The case, like several others that Trump is pursuing in tandem with his bid for a third presidential term, was inevitably intertwined with the primary election.

The Times reported that the former president avoided spending his own money on his various legal battles and instead used funds from his political action committee to pay for various court costs. However, his latest amount is much larger than the amount in his political report and he will have to “reach into his own pocket,” the outlet reported.
