One New Jersey firefighter was killed and at least three others injured in a Plainfield house fire, authorities said.
Marques Hudson was among the firefighters called to the blaze at a home across from Emerson Elementary School at 8 a.m. Friday, officials said. A Plainfield spokesperson said there were about 10 people inside, but all escaped without injury.
Officials said other firefighters were able to rescue Hudson from inside after receiving the emergency call. He died at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital. At least three other firefighters were taken to hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Mayor Adrian Mapp said at a news conference that Hudson “either fell through the floor or fell down the stairs.” Authorities did not provide further details about the situation, citing an active investigation.
A firefighter who responded to a call at a home in Plainfield, New Jersey, was reported dead.
The mayor said Hudson’s death brought “unimaginable grief” to those close to him and called it the worst day in his 10 years as Plainfield’s top councilor.
“He was more than just a firefighter. He exemplified the very essence of heroism, putting the lives of others before his own, and is a testament to his unwavering dedication and courage,” Plainfield officials said in a statement. ”.
Gov. Phil Murphy said he would sign an executive order requiring flags to be lowered to half-staff in Hudson’s honor.

“The tragic death of this courageous young man is a reminder of the great risks our nation’s firefighters face every day in the line of duty,” Murphy said in a statement. “We are grateful to all our brave firefighters like Firefighter Marquis Hudson for their service to our state.”
