Neuralink’s billionaire founder Elon Musk said on Sunday that the first human being received an implant from the brain chip startup and is recovering well. post on social media platform X on Monday.
The Food and Drug Administration last year gave the company permission to conduct the first clinical trial testing the implant in humans.
“Early results show promising neuronal spike detection,” Musk added.
The company’s PRIME Study is a test of wireless brain-computer interfaces to assess the safety of implants and surgical robots.
The study will evaluate the capabilities of an interface that allows people with quadriplegia, or paralysis of all four limbs, to control devices with their thoughts, according to the company’s website.
Neuralink did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for further details.
Reuters reported earlier this month that Neuralink was fined for violating Department of Transportation regulations regarding the movement of hazardous materials.
