Collin Morikawa offers simple solution to improve PGA Tour telecasts, create more fans

Avid golf fans have long complained about the sport’s broadcasts. Whether it’s NBC, CBS, Golf Channel or ESPN, fans always complain about long commercials, long interviews, or how the cameras spend too much time watching players walk down the fairway.

Collin Morikawa understands these feelings.

So ahead of this week’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, the two-time major champion offered a simple solution to the delight of golf fans around the world.

“We need to make golf more interesting for viewers. How can we make broadcasts more accessible? At the end of the day, how can we see more golf shots?” Will you be able to do it?” Morikawa-san asked.

“If I play early, I start golfing on Thursday. When I turned it on, I saw three golf shots and wondered why.”

To the credit of some broadcasters, PGA Tour coverage has improved in recent years. At last weekend’s Farmers Insurance Open, CBS High praise Regarding coverage of the third and final round.

However, improvements are still needed and the answer is simple. It’s about showing more golf shots.

“The current situation in sports is uphill, right?” Morikawa said.

“Obviously football is the biggest thing. At the end of the day, if continuing to draw attention to golf is the biggest hurdle we have to accomplish, how do we get even more attention to golf? Can we do it? I would like to see a lot of money put into this.”

PGA Tour pros know their league needs more fans.

Especially given how amateur competition has exploded in recent years, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s garnered even more attention.

This, combined with legalized gambling, gives the PGA Tour and its television partners a tremendous opportunity to increase the popularity of the sport.

“Golf isn’t that fast, with body contact and tackles,” Morikawa joked.

“It’s not golf, right? But I think most fans understand that…The reason people pay attention to other sports is because people watch more sports. [and in turn,] You can probably bet more. People prefer to bet when they can watch it live instead of on ShotTracer. ”

Mr. Morikawa is right.

Golf fans, and sports bettors alike, want to see more shots on golf television.

That’s why the popularity of ESPN+’s live PGA Tour coverage has skyrocketed recently. ESPN+ does a great job of showing notable groups and players on the course outside of live broadcast hours.

Still, you can also improve your streaming platform by showing more golf shots.

“You can’t change aspects of all these things, that we have 18 holes, that we have players who start on Thursday, and that there are two waves. You can’t change that, right?” Morikawa said. continued.

“But the fact that you see more golf shots can be changed. That’s a big part of actually wanting to go see golf, right?”

Yes, Colin. you are right.
