Police Chief Kevin Bethel said at a news conference that the 10-person team broke through the first door of the home and opened fire after they began entering the second door. The bullet ricocheted off the officer’s bulletproof vest and struck him in the hand, Bethel said.

Bethel said the officers did not return fire and the person inside surrendered.

The officer, a 33-year veteran, was treated at a hospital and has since been released, he said.

“It could have been a lot worse,” Mayor Sherrell Parker said. “This is yet another reminder of the senseless gun violence that is all too present here in the city of Philadelphia.”
