Mike McCarthy is the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, but that could change quickly depending on how the season starts next year.
And with Bill Belichick possibly remaining on the coaching market through the 2024 season, his availability will certainly dictate what happens early on with the Cowboys.
Owner Jerry Jones said he never spoke to coaching candidates after the Cowboys’ disappointing season, but he made it clear this week that he and Belichick have They said they could cooperate.
“know [Belichick] I like him personally,” Jones said Tuesday. According to Yahoo Sports. “I have no doubt that we can work together. None. None.”
Jones was clearly aware of the general idea that there was one obstacle that could keep Belichick away from Dallas.
The Cowboys’ owner is known for his penchant for power over the football side of the organization, and Belichick is known for wanting that as well.
But Jones wanted to make it clear that he would be working with one of the greatest coaches in the game.
“We all know he’s definitely good, probably at the top of his profession,” Jones said. “It’s ridiculous to say someone is automatically guaranteed a spot in the Super Bowl. That’s too expensive. [an] expectations for him. But is he perhaps the greatest pro football coach of all time? Maybe so.
“He’s a friend, I like him, and just to be clear, I have no problem working with him.”
McCarthy has Jones’ support after three consecutive 12-win seasons ended in yet another quick playoff exit.
The Cowboys’ owner praised McCarthy’s work with franchise quarterback Dak Prescott, who led the league in touchdown passes this season and posted a career-best passer rating of 105.9.
“Working with Dak, his work on offense was really good,” Jones said. “I feel it, he feels it, and we all feel there’s more to improve with duck. The best way to eat bone-in meat is to continue.”
For now, McCarthy is the Cowboys’ coach, but Jones is ensuring that a very interesting story ends.
