“Oh, well, let me tell you, it means a lot to me,” Biden responded. “My son spent a year in Iraq, and I lost him.”
Contrary to his claims, Beau Biden died of glioblastoma, the most common form of brain cancer, in May 2015 at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Beau served a tour in Iraq from 2008 to 2009.
President Biden has spoken several times about his son dying in Iraq, although he has claimed that his illness may have been caused by the country’s toxic burn scars.
“I lost a son — we lost a son in Iraq,” Biden claimed in a June 2023 speech at Nash Community College in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Biden made similar claims about his son’s death a month earlier, in May 2023, during a meeting with Marines stationed in Japan.
