The President of Cyprus on Friday called on all government ministers to sign a declaration of “zero tolerance” against sexist behavior and sexual harassment against employees and visitors to government institutions.
Cyprus already has strict laws against sexual harassment and gender discrimination in the workplace, but Cyprus President Nicos Christodoulides has made what he calls an “institutional commitment” to stamp out such behavior within the government. , this is the first time that ministers have been required to sign such a declaration.

According to the European Institute for Gender Equality, Cyprus ranks 22nd out of 27 European Union countries in terms of gender equality, with a score of 57.3 out of 100.

All ministers, deputy ministers and commissioners signed the declaration at a ceremony at the Presidential Palace. Christodoulides said he expects all of his subordinates to implement the declaration.
“We must first and foremost lead by example through our actions, our attitude and our approach,” Christodoulides said.
Christodoulides, a father of four daughters, has made gender equality a key policy goal of his nearly one-year-old government. He said the government was already working to “eliminate gender discrimination going back many years”.
Cyprus’ Gender Equality Commissioner Josie Christodoulou said the declaration formally integrates gender issues into all levels of government.
