Virginia Democrat suggests new hostage deal is ‘best chance’ to deescalate war in Gaza

Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) said Saturday that the “best chance” to defuse the war in Gaza between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas is to release the group’s remaining hostages at the end of the war. He suggested negotiating a new agreement. Onset.

In Kaine’s view, the deal would also help ease tensions between Yemen’s Houthi rebels and the United States and its regional allies.

“I think there is only one path to de-escalation at this point,” Cain said in an interview. MSNBC Ali Velshi. “The United States should pursue this vigorously, and the most important thing is the hostage deal, which frees the hostages still held by Hamas.”

Kaine, a member of the Senate Armed Services and Foreign Affairs Committee, said retaliatory strikes against the Houthis for their deadly activities in the Red Sea were justified, but they would not deescalate the situation.

“With regard to the Houthis and attacks on the Red Sea, the president said he does not expect them to ease and that if more missiles are fired against the Houthis, there will likely be more missiles fired against ships in the Red Sea.” ” Kane said. “So strategies that hope to de-escalate these attacks are not working so far.”

The Virginia senator reiterated his argument for brokering a new hostage deal with a humanitarian moratorium and allowing more aid to flow into Gaza. This is a necessary step to ensure that Palestinians receive resources following the shelling that began in October. In July, Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, killing more than 1,200 Israelis and taking prisoners.

Kaine detailed the first hostage deal, which saw Hamas release more than 100 hostages held by Hamas in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners during a six-day cessation of fighting last year.

“You will remember that with the initial hostage release, there was a moratorium that allowed humanitarian aid to Gaza. And these groups in the region that we are inciting attacks on the United States, “We have dramatically escalated our activities,” the senator claimed.

Mr. Kaine has long begun to rally his support as he questions some of the Biden administration’s strategies in the Middle East. correction This is to prevent Biden from bypassing Congress in his efforts to transfer weapons to Israel.

“First of all, I think the hostages are the key to this issue. We have a humanitarian obligation to free them,” Cain said. “So that’s the starting point. But secondly, the only evidence we have of what would lead to détente was the initial release of the hostages.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to continue fighting in the region until Israel achieves “complete victory” against Hamas, including demilitarizing the Gaza Strip and securing the return of the remaining hostages.
