A message in a bottle written in a ninth-grade science class on Long Island 32 years ago was discovered Thursday in New York’s Shinnecock Bay, according to a Facebook post.
The letter, written in October 1992, read: “Dear Discoverer, As part of a 9th grade earth science project, this bottle was thrown into the Atlantic Ocean near Long Island. The following information Please fill out the form and return the bottle to us. Thank you, Sean and Ben. ”
Inside was an envelope with a return address to Mattituck High School.
According to the New York Post, Adam Travis, who lives on the Shinnecock reservation, posted a photo of the bottle and a message on the Mattituck High School Alumni Association Facebook page, revealing that he found it in the bay.

The post received more than 4,000 likes and hundreds of messages remembering Richard E. Brooks, the class of 1992 teacher who organized the project.
“Oh my god… I’m in tears and I’m so touched. Dad really loved doing this activity with his students. This is such a happy and fitting memory!! Post it Thank you so much for that!!” his son John Brooks commented on the post.
Brooks told the Post that her father died last year from Alzheimer’s disease, adding that her father was “born to be a teacher.”

“He was a teacher who sang silly songs and did a little dance, anything that got his students involved. That’s why he got his message across with the bottle project,” Brooks said. .
