Former President Trump revealed his criteria for a running mate on Sunday, but told Fox News host Maria Bartiromo he would not announce a running mate “for a while.”
President Trump made the comments during an interview with Bartiromo that aired on “Sunday Morning Futures.” He said his most important element is to ensure that his vice presidential nominee can step up and carry out the presidency in times of emergency.
“What criteria do you use to identify vice presidential candidates?” Bartiromo asked.
President Trump: “It’s always important who will be a good president. Of course you always have to think about that, because in an emergency situation, things will happen, right? No matter who you are, things will happen. That must come first.”

“Who is your running mate?” Bartiromo pressed.
“Well, I have a lot of good people. I have a lot of good ideas,” he said, adding, “I talk to everyone.”

“You know, I called. [South Carolina Sen.] People like Tim Scott and Tim Scott and I said you’re a much better candidate for me than you are for me,” President Trump said, adding, “When I was looking at him, He was in good spirits. He was good, but very reserved.”

“Last week, I watched him protect me, put his body on the line for me, fight for me. I said, ‘You’re a much better person to me than you are to yourself. ” he continued.
President Trump went on to praise South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, noting that she publicly said she would “never run for office because I can never beat him.”

President Trump also denied reports that his campaign was exploring possible contact with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. early in the election season. President Trump said the exchange “never happened.”
