The Iowa Legislature is debating a rule that would require schools to stand and sing the national anthem at the beginning of each day. fox news report.

House Study Bill 587 requires students to not only sing the national anthem, but also learn about the song, how it was composed, and the history that led to it becoming the national anthem.

Students, especially those who are physically unable to stand during the song, will be able to formally opt out with parental approval.

Democratic Rep. Sue Cahill slammed the idea, saying focusing on the national anthem would “take away” learning.

“School classrooms are not places where we mandate the national anthem and therefore mandate patriotism from students. It’s something students choose, it’s something they learn, and I think they will learn in other ways,” she said. Ta. “It takes time not only to sing but also to teach the songs, which takes up valuable teacher time and student learning time,” she added.

But Republican Representative Henry Stone is “100 percent” in favor.

“I believe that children should have more exposure to the national anthem, our country’s supporters, our military, and I am one of those people,” Stone explained. “I grew up in a family that valued patriotism and promoted patriotism. That’s why I enlisted as a third-generation military officer and served our country for 22 years. Therefore, I believe in this bill. I believe I can give something back to the school that will add value.”

Naturally, left-wing groups are also against it.

For example, Damien Thompson of Iowa Safe Schools argued that the bill is likely “unconstitutional.” “Students and teachers alike do not waive their First Amendment rights at the door of a school building,” Thompson shouted.
