Most voters want verdict on Trump election subversion charges before Election Day: Poll

The legal drama surrounding former President Donald Trump’s role in trying to overturn his 2020 presidential election defeat is weighing heavily on voters as they head to the polls this year, a new survey finds.

Federal prosecutors have charged Trump with four felonies related to the 2020 vote, but Trump has maintained immunity from criminal prosecution while president.

a CNN poll Released and implemented on Monday Independent company SSRS According to the survey, 48% of respondents said it was “essential” that a verdict be reached by Election Day, and a further 16% said they wanted to know the outcome of the case by Nov. 5.

President Biden is running for a second term, while President Trump is aiming for a rematch in 2020. Despite his ongoing legal problems, Trump is the clear frontrunner for the Republican nomination. The two candidates are close in a hypothetical matchup.

The judge overseeing Trump’s federal interference case postponed a March 4 trial date for an appeals court to consider Trump’s immunity claim.

Special U.S. Attorney Jack Smith had previously asked the Supreme Court to immediately take up the matter beyond the appeals panel, but the request was denied.

Of those who said in a CNN/SSRS poll that they wanted to rule on election-subversion cases, only 35% said they trusted the Supreme Court in election-related cases.

Forty-two percent of respondents said they had a great deal or some confidence that the Supreme Court would make the right decisions on potential cases related to the 2024 election.

More than four in five people surveyed said they believe losing candidates “have an obligation to accept the results and concede” after states certify the results.

Trump has refused to publicly acknowledge his 2020 loss to Biden. Instead, he is involved in several unsuccessful lawsuits challenging the results in key states. A CNN poll found that only a quarter of Americans said they would accept defeat if Trump loses to Biden again in November.

Three-quarters of Americans think Trump would seek to pardon federal crimes if he wins a second election.

The survey was conducted between January 25th and 30th among 1,212 adults. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.
