Republican candidate Nikki Haley has retracted her statement that Texas could secede from the United States if it decides to do so.

Asked whether he thought the Lone Star State had the right to secede, Mr. Haley (R.S.C.) replied, “No, I don’t think so.” According to the Constitution, that is not possible. ”
“What I think they’re entitled to is to have the power to protect themselves and do all of that. Texas has been talking about secession for a long time. The Constitution doesn’t allow for that.” she said. “But what I’m saying is…where does that come from? It comes from people not believing that the government will listen to them.”
These latest comments are contrary to comments she made last week, in which she said, “If Texas decides it wants to do that, it can do that,” referring to secession.
“When an entire state says, ‘We don’t want to be a part of America anymore,’ that’s a decision they make,” Haley continued.
Haley’s comments last week echoed her position in a 2013 interview in which she said she believed states had a constitutional right to secede from the federal government.
According to an 1869 Supreme Court ruling, states do not have a constitutional right to unilaterally secede.
This comes after Haley faced criticism in December for refraining from citing slavery as the main reason for the Civil War at a town hall in New Hampshire.
Ms Haley then tried to defuse the anger of her followers over her comments about slavery, declaring: “I mean, of course the Civil War was about slavery.”
