Rangers’ Johnny Brodzinski still learning NHL lessons

In past seasons, Johnny Brodzinski would never have been in this spot.

This was his 21st consecutive game and 22nd total for the Rangers in the 2023-24 season.

Careers that have been recalled and reassigned have finally brought some stability. His name no longer appears in the transaction log.

And after Tom Wilson crushed Brodzinski on Jan. 13, a mediocre third-line center in a mediocre midseason game, franchise legend and ESPN analyst Mark Mescher said during his downtime became a hot topic.

Messier accused Brodzinski of putting him in a “weak position” and said if he had done that, his career would have lasted five years instead of 26.

He implored the children watching the broadcast to turn on their sides and absorb the impact while protecting the puck.

Brodzinski hasn’t thought about the sequence since it happened, admitting he was in a vulnerable position, but was “just protecting the puck.”

“I wasn’t expecting that. [Wilson] To put all of his body into me,” Brodzinski told the Post. “Like everyone else, it’s like they’re pushing me up against the wall. Yeah, that’s what it is.”

Rather, this moment shows that the 30-year-old, who has appeared in just 132 NHL games throughout his pro career that began when he signed an entry-level contract with the Kings in 2015, still has a learning curve. .

But as the Rangers weather the rest of the season without center Filip Sitil, Brodzinski has transitioned from a key player in AHL Hartford to a regular center in the NHL, playing 30 games since being called up by the Blueshirts in late November. Participated in.

He is on track to break a career high for NHL games played in a season (35). The trade deadline still looms as a variable that could threaten Chris Drury’s progress if he chooses to acquire a center, which Brodzinski described as the most consistent he’s had in years. It may clarify the situation.

But until that milestone comes, he continues to skate with Kaapo Kakko and Will Quill, forming what Peter Laviolette calls a “remarkable” line that will play well in Wednesday’s game against the Lightning and in the short term. It is highly likely that the line will remain intact until the future. But Brodzinski has trained himself not to think too far into the future, considering the ups and downs of the seasons of the 13th, 14th and 15th forwards.

“If you’re going to be five, 10, 15 games behind, you’re going to be pushed right back down,” he said after Tuesday’s practice. “You can’t do that. You have to take it game by game.”

Brodzinski returned to the Rangers on November 29 after missing 21 games with a lower-body injury suffered against the Sabers.

He was used to how these conversations usually went. Brodzinski will probably skate in a game or two. He may be out due to injury or other reasons.

Even if he played well, Brodzinski would say, “It was a good game. See you next time.”

He would then return to the AHL, a league in which he logged 331 games in the regular season and playoffs. Maybe I’ll get another chance that year. Maybe not. For a player whose career depended on cameos, it was a life.

For Brodzinski, that happened in three seasons with the Kings (6 games, 35 games, 13 games), one season with the Sharks (3 games), and his first two years with the Rangers (22 games, 17 games). . He learned that he has a poor memory. Strive to make the most of your leadership role in the AHL.

That way, when Brodzinski returns, he will have younger players assisting and contributing — typically skating for about 20 minutes per game in the minors and anchoring the power play. I will probably serve.

“It sucks to quit playing in the NHL, but even if you go down, you’re going to play full time,” Brodzinski said.

But Brodzinski has not returned to Hartford since the November trade.

He scored two goals and scored 11 points, a viral hit that sparked criticism of Messier.

When Kakko returned, they lined up with Quill and brought “something different to the table,” Laviolette said.

During the Rangers’ win over the Avalanche on Monday, Laviolette continued to use that line every three shifts to get ice time. According to Natural Stat Trick, they led the Rangers squad in dangerous chances (3) and expected goals (0.45).

Brodzinski’s first few games with the Rangers were all about getting into a rhythm, Laviolette said. In Hartford, Brodzinski was moved from wing to center in case the Blueshirts needed an opening, making sure he wasn’t replaced with another AHL player.

He finally found a way to stay there.

“This time it feels a little different, with a more expanded look,” he said.
