A conservative legal group has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the NFL over the race-based “Rooney Rule,” which requires interviews for Black people for certain leadership roles within the league’s teams.

The Rooney Rule initially focused on black candidates for coaching positions, but in 2022 the NFL expanded the rule to require all 32 teams to hire women and minorities as assistant coaches as well.

“If the National Football League truly wants to eliminate discrimination in the hiring process, then the NFL should end discrimination in the hiring process, follow meritocracy on the field, and abolish the Rooney Rule,” the AFL concluded. .
