Trump's Justice Department Files Lawsuit Against California over Glock Ban

On Wednesday, Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon announced plans for the Department of Justice to sue California regarding the state’s ban on Glocks.

Dhillon had previously suggested that a lawsuit was imminent, cautioning Governor Gavin Newsom and California Attorney General Rob Bonta that action would be taken if the ban, effective July 1, 2026, went into effect.

In a press release, Dhillon stated, “The Civil Rights Division protects law-abiding citizens from states seeking to illegally disarm them. This case exemplifies the Department of Justice’s commitment to upholding the Second Amendment by safeguarding the public against unconstitutional firearm regulations.”

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche commented:

The Second Amendment is a fundamental right for all Americans, including those in California. The state cannot prohibit the most popular handgun in the country. We will defend the rights of legal gun owners and prevent California’s government from encroaching on our liberties.

According to reports, Newsom signed the Glock ban into law on October 10, 2025.

The ban, introduced by Democratic lawmakers, was a response to the illegal use of Glock switches, which are federally banned components allowing a Glock to fire in fully automatic mode.

Reports indicate that the passing of the Glock ban was facilitated by Democrats labeling Glocks as “machine gun convertible pistols.”
