Thieves steal 200-foot tower from Alabama radio station

Employees at an Alabama radio station are puzzled how a 200-foot-tall tower was stolen from their property.

WJLX station manager Brett Elmore told WBRC-TV he doesn’t know how the thieves got away with the structure.

“I tried all weekend to figure it out and just couldn’t,” Elmore said. “I’ve been in radio all my life, and then I’ve been in radio professionally for 26 years, and I can say I’ve never heard anything like this. Now I can say I’ve seen it all. .”

Elmore learned of the theft when landscaping crews went to the Jasper tower site for work.

“They stole all the equipment from the building, cut the branch line to the tower, and managed to take out 200 victims. [foot] Please remove the tower and remove it from the site,” a post on the radio station’s Facebook page reads.

The post noted that the thieves committed a federal crime of tampering with a federally licensed facility.

Elmore said the radio station will work to rebuild the tower, but wants thieves to know they will work with investigators in the search.

“It’s really heartbreaking for such a minor operation, but like I said, I believe we’ll find out who did this,” he said. “This is a federal crime and absolutely worthless to them.”

Elmore said WJLX is working with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to obtain temporary authority to continue broadcasting its AM channel through other means.
