Mr. Nixon, whose real name was Neil Kirby McMillan Jr., was found dead aboard the Outlaw Country Cruise, on which he co-hosted and regularly performed on the annual cruise.
“From August 2, 1957 to February 7, 2024, Mojo Nixon. How you live is how you die. Mojo Nixon is full-tilt, wide-open, rock hard and rooted. was rotting and burst into flames as he turned the corner on two wheels…” the family said in a statement on Facebook. “After a wild show, a wild night, closing the bar, taking no prisoners, and having a delicious breakfast with my bandmates and friends.”
“The heart attack on the Outlaw Country Cruise was about right…and that’s how he did it. Mojo left the building,” the statement continued. “Elvis is everywhere, so I know he was waiting for him in the alley. Heaven help us all.”
Nixon was born in North Carolina in 1957. He produced six albums with musician Skid Roper and reached the Billboard charts with his hit single “Elvis Is Everywhere.” The low-budget music video produced for this song actually unexpectedly made him an MTV staple.
Additionally, Nixon and Lauper recorded six albums together in the ’80s. After the two separated, Nixon continued his independent career, releasing several solo albums and multiple collaborative long-play tracks.
He has also worked as an actor and radio DJ, appearing regularly on Sirius XM’s Outlaw Country Channel in the mid-2000s, where he was given the name “Afternoon Loon.”
“We are absolutely devastated,” said Jeff Cuellar, CEO of Sixman, which organized the Outlaw Country Cruise. “Our thoughts and hearts are with the Mojo family and the Outlaw community.”
Nixon summed up his career the way only he could.
“Mojo Nixon wanted to be Richard Pryor. If he were white and played in a rockabilly band, he’d be like Richard Pryor’s stupid cousin. I wanted to shock people and tell the truth at the same time. You said something telling.”
“I don’t have a lot of talent, but what I do have is a huge amount of enthusiasm,” he continued. “As Mr. Rotten used to say, ‘Unlimited Supply!!!'”
