Houston attorney gets 180 days for spiking wife’s drinks with abortion drugs

A Texas man who drugged his wife’s drink in order to have an abortion has been sentenced to 180 days in prison, suspended for 10 years.

Houston attorney Mason Herring, 39, pleaded guilty Wednesday to charges of injury to a child and assault of a pregnant person. He was originally charged with grievous assault with intent to induce an abortion.

Katherine Herring, who filed for divorce, told the court that the prison sentence was not long enough. She said her third child, a 1-year-old daughter, was born about 10 weeks early and has developmental delays, and she goes to therapy eight times a week.

“I don’t think 180 days is justice when you tried to kill a child seven times,” Katherine Herring said.

Katherine Herring told authorities that her husband began lecturing her about hydration and giving water in March 2022. She said that after drinking her first cup, she looked cloudy and became seriously ill. She explained that her husband probably had a dirty cup or water pipe.

Katherine Herring became suspicious and began refusing several other drinks her husband offered her. She then finds a trash can of medication containing misoprostol, a drug used to induce abortion.

She also provided police with footage from a hidden camera installed at her husband’s home, where he did not live. One of them showed him mixing a substance in one of her drinks, Katherine Herring said.

Mason Herring’s attorney, Dan Kogel, said the plea agreement and sentence were reasonable.
