Belichick will be joining the Patriots’ staff next season.
Brian Belichick, the son of legendary coach Bill Belichick, who parted ways with the Patriots last month after 24 seasons, will remain with the team. ESPN reported Wednesday.
Brian has been with the Patriots since 2016 as a scouting assistant and was named safeties coach in 2020.
ESPN reported that Bryan “could potentially fill” the position as part of new head coach Jerrod Mayo’s staff.
Mayo, a former Patriots linebacker turned coach for the position, was named Belichick’s successor in late January.
Mayo, 37, was part of Belichick’s championship roster in 2014 when the Patriots defeated the Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX.
Brian will remain in New England, but his older brother and former outside linebackers coach Steve Belichick will transfer.
He was named defensive coordinator for the Washington Huskies earlier this week.
After a dismal 4-13 season, there were big changes in New England.
The elder Belichick, who coached the Patriots to six Super Bowl championships, announced in January that he would be stepping away from the team.
“I’ll always be a Patriot,” Belichick said. “I’m looking forward to being back here, but for now I’m going to move on. I’m looking forward to the future and I’m excited, but I’m always very grateful for this opportunity and the support here.” doing.”
Following his departure from the Patriots, the 71-year-old was heavily linked to the Falcons’ coaching position becoming vacant after Arthur Smith was fired after three seasons in January.
Despite two interviews, the Falcons passed on Belichick and hired former Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris.
Belichick has surprisingly missed out on the head coaching merry-go-round this year, leading to speculation that he could make media appearances.
