Maryland State Police are investigating the cause of a crash Thursday afternoon in Columbia in which a bus carrying middle school students ran off the road and overturned, with multiple occupants being evaluated for injuries.

According to Howard County Police, the bus overturned in the 7300 block of Old Columbia Road in Columbia just after 3:30 p.m.
There were 19 Hammond Middle School students on board the bus when it crashed.

Police said the 19 students, two boys and two girls between the ages of 11 and 14, were taken to a nearby hospital to be evaluated for injuries.
The 30-year-old woman driving the bus was not injured in the accident. Police also said there was no indication the driver was impaired.
Police have not said why the bus veered off the road and into the grass as the investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Howard County school officials did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s inquiries about the incident.
Shortly after the incident, Howard County Public Schools officials sent a message to families of students in the district alerting them to what had happened, according to FOX 5 in Washington, D.C.

“A serious bus accident involving Hammond Middle School students occurred this afternoon,” the statement said, adding that several students were injured and are being treated.
