Putin, Russian officials react to new Ukrainian commander-in-chief

Russian leaders say recent changes at the highest levels of Ukraine’s military will not change the ongoing invasion.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky Appointed Сol on Thursday. General Oleksandr Shirschiky was appointed as the country’s highest-ranking army general in the reorganization of the country’s armed forces.

“We do not believe that it will be a factor in changing the direction of the ‘special military operation,'” Russian government spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Friday.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev also reacted to the appointment in a scathing essay posted on his Telegram account.

“When I look at the biography of the new commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Shirushkyi, I feel hatred, contempt and disgust,” Medvedev wrote on a social media platform, according to Reuters.

“I am disgusted by the man who was a Soviet Russian officer, turned traitor to Bandera, broke his oath to serve the Nazis, and destroyed his loved ones. May the earth burn under his feet. !” the former president added.

Stepan Bandera was a far-right Ukrainian nationalist leader from the World War II era who is often cited by the Kremlin to justify invasions.

He is sometimes cited by President Putin and the Russian establishment as the architect of the “Nazification” of Ukraine.

Mr. Medvedev currently serves as deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council.

President Zelensky said his decision to hand over the position to a new commander was not a reflection of Zarouzhny’s performance, but was part of a broader overhaul of the country’s war leadership.

“Now is the time for such a renewal,” Zelenskiy said.

“We need a reset, a new beginning,” Zelenskiy added. Ukraine’s president insisted that the review was “not about individuals, but about the direction of the country’s leadership.”
