The White House on Friday sought to discredit special counsel Robert Hur’s findings that raised new questions about President Biden’s mental acuity.
Oversight and Investigations Press Secretary Ian Sams said the report revealed wrongdoing related to Biden’s handling of classified documents, but that Huh described the president as “sympathetic and well-meaning.” He harshly criticized him for calling him “an old man with a bad memory.”
“Unfortunately, the unwarranted statements made by the former attorney general have rightly gotten everyone’s attention,” Sams told reporters at the daily White House press briefing. “They are wrong and inaccurate.”
Mr. Xu has been investigating Mr. Biden’s improper retention of classified records since last year, and on Thursday released a report detailing his findings. However, the special counsel declined to file charges against Biden. “Simply put, this case is closed because the facts and evidence do not support the theory here. Unsubstantiated comments from respected experts saying they are out of line are inappropriate; We should not lose sight of the fact that this case is “closed,” and the facts and evidence show they reached the correct conclusion.”
Biden addressed the report in a short address to the nation from the White House on Thursday night, expressing anger at a reporter’s question about his age.
“I mean well, I’m old, I know what I’m doing,” Biden said. “I became president. I got this country back on its feet. I don’t need his recommendation.”
Biden added: “My memory is fine.”

The president was particularly furious at Mr. Xu’s suggestion during the interview that he did not remember when his son Beau died.
“How can he bring it up?” Biden said. “Frankly, when I was asked the question, I was like, what the hell is this all about?”
