Gascón pressed at DA debate over lax policies on gang-related prosecutions

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón faced intense questioning, including from a mother whose child was killed by a gang member, during district attorney debate over gang-related crime enforcement policies.

According to Fox 11, when Gascón became district attorney, he prohibited prosecutors from pursuing tougher penalties for gang members. Several of the deputy district attorneys who are running against him said at a panel Thursday in Beverly Hills that they disagree with the policy. .

Emma Rivas, whose son was murdered in 2016, confronted Gascon about the impact of his policies on the sentencing of his killer.

“My child was killed by a gang member. You have more sympathy for the gang member who killed my child in front of my house. Could you please explain? I have been looking for you for four years. “Because we are,” she said.

Another challenger, Jonathan Hatami, slammed Gascon’s policies. “When Georges Gascón became president, he ordered all of us to remove allegations and enhancements in all cases,” Khatami said.

Amid heated exchanges and audience reactions, one activist accused Mr. Khatami of racism, an allegation he rejected.

“Emma was a person of color, her son was a person of color, and they were murdered. Fighting for justice is not racism,” Khatami said.

Khatami gave several more examples of victims whose killers did not receive enhancements at Gascón’s direction.

Mr. Gascon has served as Los Angeles County District Attorney since December 2020.
