Missouri mother charged for accidentally putting baby in the oven instead of crib

A Missouri mother burned her 1-month-old baby to death in an oven, then claimed to police that she mistook the rice cooker for a crib, authorities said.

Police described the scene at the Kansas City home Friday as “horrific” after mother Mariah Thomas’ infant was found severely burned and not breathing. According to the Guardian.

“I was trying to put my child down for a nap and I accidentally put my child in the oven instead of the crib,” Thomas told authorities. According to Fox4.

“Our hearts are heavy with the loss of this precious life,” said Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker.

“I believe that the criminal justice system will respond appropriately to such a terrible situation,” he said, according to local reports.

Thomas was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and death of a child.
