Israeli forces have reportedly discovered an underground tunnel beneath the headquarters of the United Nations Palestinian Refugee Agency in Gaza City. era of israel. The military further suggested that Hamas militants were using the site to store electrical materials.
Israel has claimed the agency has been collaborating with Hamas since the October 7 attack, in which 1,200 Israelis were massacred and another 253 were abducted and taken back to Gaza. The Jewish state also announced that more than a dozen United Nations employees took part in the attack.
The Israeli military invited journalists to tour the tunnels on Thursday. The tunnels do not appear to have confirmed any activity by Hamas militants beneath them, but it did confirm that part of the tunnels ran under the facility’s courtyard.
The Israeli military claimed that the command was providing power to the terrorist group.
Associated Press report UNRWA Executive Director Philippe Lazzarini said UNRWA had no knowledge of underground tunnels. Lazzarini went on to suggest that an “independent investigation” would be valuable.
UNRWA has lost funding from top donors since the accusations surfaced late last month. The Times of Israel noted that the agency could suspend operations in Gaza and other locations across the Middle East within weeks.
However, it appears to be a coincidence that the IDF discovered the alleged Hamas data center while UNRWA was being investigated. The Israeli military did not know much about the Hamas data center until new information came to light after Shin Bet interrogations of captured terrorists, but they reportedly helped pinpoint the drilling site.
Col. Benny Aharon, commander of the 401st Armored Brigade, said: “The IDF has been here before, initially to destroy the enemy, but the last time we were here we collected a lot of intelligence documents and findings. That’s what got us here, and now we’ve conducted a targeted operation to take away this ability.”
“We had basic information, but it wasn’t enough to dig 20 meters down and find it, we needed a little more information. We have information that comes from the prisoners we captured, the computers, documents and maps we found.” he added.
