Chiefs are the best NFL futures bet

Death, taxes, and the Chiefs’ Super Bowl championship.

If that wasn’t an obvious reality in the NFL before, it is now.

San Francisco bettors had an unpleasant ending Sunday night after Patrick Mahomes won his third Super Bowl in overtime.

Think of it this way. He won his Lombardi Trophy through 50 percent of his career.

The 49ers had been favored in every game they played since Week 1. The 49ers were the No. 1 team in offensive DVOA and red zone conversions, Brock Purdy led all quarterbacks in QBR and passer rating, and Christian McCaffrey was crowned rushing champion by nearly 300 points. Yards above the field.

But no matter how strong the 49ers seemed in the regular season, Mahomes’ dominance in the playoffs was still inevitable.

It’s not a quantifiable advantage, but you knew it was one when Mahomes took his fate into his own hands by trotting eight yards with fourth out and first base in overtime.

Now in the midst of an established dynasty, Kansas City is a new team that people will hate. But no matter what anyone thinks about the Chiefs, there’s no denying their profitability.

According to a study by Action Network, if you placed a $100 Super Bowl futures bet on the Chiefs every season since Mahomes became the starting quarterback in 2018, you would have increased your bet by $1,900.

They become the first franchise to win back-to-back Super Bowls since Tom Brady and Bill Belichick did it in 2004 and 2005. For the next 14 years, three more bodies were left in the tank.

Additionally, the Chiefs became the first team in history to win two consecutive Super Bowls as an underdog. Mahomes is having fun here. He is 11-1-1 against the spread overall as an underdog and 4-0 straight up as a “playoff dog” in his career.

The Chiefs will be aiming for another championship next season as they look to make their third consecutive Super Bowl appearance.

Kansas City opened 2023 as a favorite after defeating the Eagles in Super Bowl LVII, but sank to +900 by Week 18 after a 13-12 win over the Chargers.

Want to guess who was outbid them at that point? The Bills, the Ravens, and of course the 49ers, three teams that were eliminated as underdogs this postseason.

Oddsmakers’ current perceptions have proven irrelevant when it comes to the Chiefs. Regular bettors now know better than to doubt Mahomes, as his 69% of handles are placed in Kansas City to cover the spread against San Francisco.

Do you want to bet on the NFL?

I could have made the same argument about Mahomes 365 days ago, but after a season of adversity, controversy and, at times, mediocrity, it’s hard to imagine a player as safe a future pick as the Chiefs.

I’m confident that Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen will be back as bloodthirsty as ever, and the 49ers will be a sleeping giant awakened. The stronger the threat, the higher Mahomes seems to rank.

It’s time to embrace proven greatness for what it is.
