An Army nutritionist from Illinois has died in Kuwait in an incident unrelated to combat, military officials announced Wednesday.
The U.S. Army Reserve Command announced that Lt. Col. Troy E. Bartley, of Alton, Illinois, died Sunday at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. Bartley, 57, was assigned to the 1st Theater Sustainment Command’s 3rd Medical Command (Forward).

The Army Reserve Command said Bartley died after a “non-combat-related incident,” but the exact cause of death was under investigation and no additional information was immediately available.

“We lost a husband, father, friend, professional and leader in this terrible tragedy,” Col. Thomas A. McMahan, commander of the 3rd Medical Command, said in a news release. “The loss of an Army family member is difficult and we extend our deepest condolences to his family as we grieve together.”
Bartley received numerous military awards and decorations, including the Distinguished Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. He enlisted in the Army in February 2003, then took the Army Medical Officer Basic Course and served at the 325th Medical Hospital in Independence, Missouri.

Bartley went on to serve as nutritionist, company commander, and brigade executive officer. In July 2023, he joined the forward team of the U.S. Army Central and 1st Theater Sustainment Command in Kuwait as a nutritionist supporting troops deployed to the U.S. Central Command area of operations in support of Operation Spartan Shield, officials said. said the person.
