Joy Behar Voices Shame Over Being American
Joy Behar recently reiterated her feelings of shame regarding her American identity on ABC’s The View, stating, “As we all should be.”
During the episode, Behar played a clip of comedian Larry David criticizing last week’s UFC White House event as a “travesty.” David, expressing his own embarrassment over being American, resonated with Behar, who agreed with his sentiments.
“Listen to Trump: We used to have friends all over the world, and now we don’t have any more,” she remarked.
Co-host Ana Navarro chimed in, pointing out that while some might disagree with David’s comments, there are many nations where such expressions could lead to dire consequences. “You could end up in serious trouble in places like Iran, Cuba, North Korea, or Nicaragua, from where I fled,” she added with evident sarcasm, referencing her past remarks about Trump.
Throughout the conversation, Behar emphasized her embarrassment about the treatment of immigrants in the U.S. “I’m ashamed of this country and how he treats immigrants,” she said, echoing a commonly heard criticism. “He’s separating children from their families.”
Reflecting on her family’s past, Behar shared, “My family came here 100 years ago,” before discussing the struggles of Italian-Americans. “Italians came here. Italian-Americans are some of the most patriotic people in this country.” She mimicked Italian immigrants, highlighting their gratitude for America.
Adding a note of irony, Behar said, “And now he treats immigrants the same way he treats immigrants.” She maintained that it’s reasonable for people like Larry David to feel embarrassed to be American, a sentiment she believes everyone should share.
In contrast, Alyssa Farrar Griffin expressed her pride in being American, sharing that she enjoyed the 250th anniversary celebrations mainly through the World Cup. “I don’t know much about football, but it’s absolutely energizing to see all these good-looking players and to meet people from around the world discovering things about America,” she remarked.
