‘Monty Python’ star Eric Idle, 80, has to ‘work for’ his living: ‘Not easy at this age’

“Monty Python” star Eric Idle hasn’t retired from Hollywood yet.

In a recent exchange on X (formerly known as Twitter), the idol spoke candidly about his financial situation nearly 50 years after the release of the iconic film.

“I don’t understand why people always think we’re loaded,” he wrote. “Python is a disaster. 20 years ago I made money on Spamalot. I have to work for a living, which is not easy at this age.”

Idle co-wrote the screenplay for the 1975 hit Monty Python and the Holy Grail with John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Graham Chapman, Terry Jones and Michael Palin. They were all members of the comedy troupe Monty Python, along with Idol. I also appeared in movies.

This comedy is set in the Middle Ages and tells the story of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table as they search for the Holy Grail. But things go awry when they become embroiled in a modern-day murder investigation that neatly blends past and present.

In 2004, Idol brought the story of the Holy Grail back to the forefront, writing the musical “Spamalot.” The show premiered in Chicago and made her Broadway debut in February 2005. After four years and 1,575 performances, Her final performance was in January 2009.

The musical was a huge success, winning the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical and receiving a total of 14 nominations.

“I don’t care if I’m not rich. I prefer to be funny,” the idol added.

In response, one of his fans wrote: “If the universe was truly in harmony, you would be the richest person, Eric.” Meanwhile, another wrote: “That’s such a shame. It’s a scandal. You’re one of the greatest comic artists of our time and you deserve more recognition.”

Another fan tweeted: “Monty Python is Albion’s second greatest contribution to human civilization (after Will O’Stratford).” “It’s never going to be a disaster.”
