Harvard leaders subpoenaed ‘failing to produce’ docs in antisemitism investigation

Rep. Virginia Foxx, RN.C., chair of the House Education and Labor Committee, accused Harvard University of “failing to turn over priority documents” related to the committee’s anti-Semitism investigation into the Ivy League school. subpoenas were issued to several leaders.

She previously threatened to issue subpoenas if Harvard did not provide sufficient documentation on two of her four priority requests, giving the university until 5 p.m. on Feb. 14 to do so.

“Last week, I made clear to Harvard that the documents it had produced to date were woefully inadequate, and warned that subpoenas would be warranted if the university continued to miss the mark. “Enforcement action was taken that gave Harvard ample opportunity to correct course,” Fox said in a news release Friday. “Unfortunately, Harvard University did not heed the committee’s warnings and once again failed to comply with the committee’s requests.”

Harvard University is now required to submit documentation in 11 key areas that demonstrate what steps the university has taken or will take to ensure that Jewish students “feel safe and welcome on campus.” It has been demanded.

The subpoenas were served on Harvard University Senior Fellow Penny Pritzker, interim provost Dr. Alan Garber, and Harvard Management Company CEO NP Narvekar.

“I hope these subpoenas serve as a wake-up call to Harvard that Congress will not tolerate anti-Semitic hatred in our classrooms and on our campus,” Fox said.

He added that he was “extremely disappointed” in Harvard’s decision not to fully do what the committee asked in connection with the investigation. She said the university had produced 2,516 pages of documents, more than 40% of which have already been made public.

“It is unacceptable that Harvard University continues to fail to meet the committee’s demands. While Harvard’s Jewish students continue to endure the firestorm of anti-Semitism that has engulfed the campus, I will continue to support the investigation. “We will not tolerate delay or defiance,” she said.

The decision to issue the subpoena followed multiple requests to Harvard University for further information in the committee’s investigation into anti-Semitic incidents on campus, which began on December 20, 2023. Fox said the initial request included an “extensive list of documents” the committee had planned. Seeking specifically for the benefit of Harvard University.

Before the warning was issued on February 7, notices were sent again on January 9 and January 23 to fully implement the commission’s requests.

“In light of Harvard’s failure to respond to the document requests specified in the February 7 letter, and to avoid further delay in the investigation, the committee will , the submission of all response documents must be compulsory.”

Documents requested by the subpoena must be submitted by 5 p.m. on March 4.
