Anderson, who served in the Army from 2006 to 2014 and was deployed on six missions across the Middle East as part of the Global War on Terror, began his parliamentary campaign in September. He ran for office in 2022, but lost by a narrow margin to former House candidate Yesri Vega in the Republican primary.

Mr. Spanberger, a former CIA operative, defeated Mr. Vega by less than 5 percentage points in the general election, securing his third term. In November, Mr. Spanberger announced that he would not seek re-election to the House of Representatives and would run for governor.

Anderson is one of nine candidates vying for the Republican nomination for the district.

Republicans currently hold a slim three-seat majority in the House of Representatives, but they hope to expand that number even further next year, in part capitalizing on President Biden’s unpopularity. The party won a parliamentary majority after the 2022 midterm elections, but it fell far short of expectations.
