TX man killed, officer wounded in shooting at central MI café

A 29-year-old Texas man was killed and a mid-Michigan police officer was injured in a shootout at a cafe Thursday, authorities said.

Battle Creek Police Department officers were called to Café Rica at 3:42 p.m. on a report of a nuisance person, the department said in a news release.

The female officer suffered a gunshot wound to one leg, according to a news release.

She was taken to a hospital and is expected to recover. Her name has not been released.

According to the department, at 3:42 p.m., officers from the Battle Creek Police Department were called to Cafe Rica for a report of a suspicious person.

Another officer shot the suspect, who was pronounced dead, according to the release. The suspect’s name was not immediately released.

It is not clear what sparked the gunfight.
